Tegun Folk Art Galeri – A Unique Bali Gift Shop – 44 Jln Hanoman, Ubud

Tegun Folk Art Galeri – A Unique Bali Gift Shop – 44 Jln Hanoman, Ubud Tegun Galeri brings together the concepts of a museum and a shop. The intriguing, ever-changing collection includes everything from primitive carvings to highly refined woodwork, textiles and other crafts.

Tegun Galeri is a certain cure to Bali Fatigue. Tegun, one of Ubud's largest and most varied shops, prides itself on offering to both wholesales and retail customers a starling array of unique Indonesian handicrafts and folk art. The Galeri, on Jalan Hanoman, is notable for its large doors and broads windows, both of each draw Ubud's many strollers into a shop. Once, inside, the knowledgeable staff are close at hand, available to field questions and handle specials requests while, at the same time, letting each shoppers explore the store at this or her own pace. This relaxing, "laid back" environment is a big asset to shoppers, and contrasts with the more hectic atmosphere in other stores on the island.

Meghan and Kadek, the owners of Tegun Galeri, travel constantly to distant corners of Indonesia and across South East and East Asia, in search of unusual and beautiful pieces of folk art.

Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women – Ubud, Bali

Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women – Ubud, Bali The Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women was founded in 1991, in response to the total lack of awareness of the existence of women artists at that time. Over its 15 years of existence it has become one of the most respected and exciting galleries of Balinese art with a full programme of exhibitions, one-woman or group shows and events for art lovers and collectors. It also has assisted many female artists to travel overseas whether for exhibition purposes or for educational studies, or both. For 14 years, they have run a weekly workshop for young Balinese girl artists, to encourage their skills and confidence and to show their families that their talents are valued in the wider world.

The Seniwati Gallery is rightly becoming famous not only for its unique role, but also for the very high quality of art that it offers to the art-loving public to enjoy. This is the only Bali gallery that President Jimmy Carter and Mrs Carter chose to visit during their Democracy-supporting trip to Indonesia; and for many visitors to the world-famous town of Ubud, this gallery is first on their list!

Bali Temples

PURA BESAKIH

Pura Besakih is not one temple but a vast complex of temples sprawling across the mountainside. For most visitors, the first impression is of the literally hundreds of delicately towering meru, their many tiered roofs of black palm-fiber thatching pointing skyward like a fleet of rockets awaiting the signal for lift-off.

Pura Besakih is not a launch pad but a landing field for the gods. The central temple in the complex, Pura Penataran Agung, is dedicated to the god Siwa. Pura Batu Madeg is dedicated to Wisnu. Pura Kiduling Kreteg is dedicated to Brahma. There are nineteen more temples spreading up the mountain slopes, each with its own purpose and ceremonial season, but the three dedicated to the Hindu Trinity are the most important. Their orientation in relation to each other and the mountain is reflected in the three raised lotus-thrones, or padmasana trisakti, in the second courtyard of the Pura Penataran Agung, with Wisnu, Siwa, and Brahma sitting from left to right, though some say seats are not assigned.

PURA TANAH LOT

Pura Tanah Lot was founded by the 16th-century priest Danghyang Niratha out of sheer adoration for the natural beauty of the landscape here. The little temple sits atop an outcrop of rock in the surf, guarded by sea snake. Visitors are not allowed to enter the temples at Pura Tanah Lot, and this is fortunate, for they arrive by hundreds everyday. It's still a place worth visiting. The big crush of tourists appears at sunset; those looking for some peace and quite should go just before dawn.

Besides Pura Tanah Lot there are several other temples nearby arrayed along the coast. The most picturesque of these is Pura Batu Bolong, its mean "the temple on the rock with a hole on it", a wall rock just out into the sea with a tiny temple on the tip. A huge arch is carved out by the sea.

PURA ULUWATU

Bukit's most famous landmark is the temple Pura Luhur Uluwatu, an architectural marvel situated on a headland at the westernmost tip of the plateau. According to the local tradition, the first Uluwatu temple was built by Empu Kuturan in the 11 th century, as one of the territorial temples of the island. Dang Hyang Niratha, the 16 th century reformer of Balinese Hinduism, rebuilt it in its present state. He is said to have elevated to heaven from it premises.
The temple is the best known for its sunsets over the long breakers of the sea downward, but it has also one of the most exquisite architecture of the island.
Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the amazing temple perching on the edge of stiff cliff on the South Coast. Like a ship of stone afloat in the sky, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is poised 825 feet above the Indian Ocean. The temple is carved from the enormous limestone rock upon which it sits at the farthest edge. Ulu means "head", watu is "rock" and luhur implies "heavenly", "ancestral", "original" and "transcendent" all at once.

Legend says that the temple was built by Mpu Kuturan in the 11th century, and then rebuilt several hundred years later by Danghyang Nirartha, the Javanese high priest who brought renewal of Hinduism to Bali in 16th century, in anticipation of his ultimate release there. Sacred monkeys roam freely over this high and airy place.

PURA BATUKARU

The one of the six axial temples (Sad Kahyangan) sacred to all Hindu Balinese, it may take a moment to appreciate that this is one of the most ancient sacred sites on the island. In the central temple courtyard are two large, long pavilion. The inner courtyard is small and neat, with three meru of three, five, and seven tiers in honor of the deified kings of Tabanan. The lake below has a shrine in the center honoring the goddess of Lake Tamblingan and the mount of Mount Batu Karu.

PURA RAMBUT SIWI

This temple contains a relic, a lock of the sage's hair (rambut) that is venerated (siwi). The temple is finely built of red brick with exquisite paras reliefs depicting scenes from the ancient play "Arjuna Wiwaha". A particularly good sculpture of Rangda stands guard in the gateway facing the sea. Down on the beach there are several cave temples, one of the most important bearing a sacred spring.

PURA ULUN DANU BATUR

This temple is the ceremonial throne for Ida Bhatari Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake. The goddess is honored with a tall meru of eleven tiers, sign of the highest divinity. The meru of her consort, the god of Mount Agung, has only nine, while two other nine-tiered meru are dedicated to the god of Mount Batur and to deified King Waturenggong. One of the most interesting shrines in he inner courtyard is distinctly Chinese-looking pavilion to the far left, dedicated to a Chinese princess whose image is recalled in the barong landung dance play. In clear whether, the temples many-tiered meru are visible from miles away, but it is perhaps most beautiful in the tumbling fogs that swirl around the caldera.

Beaches in Bali

KUTA BEACH

Kuta beach remains the most popular strip and extends all the way up to Candu and down towards the airport in Tuban. Kuta proper remains the whitest stretch of sand and is a big draw for those who want to test their surfing skills with both a beach break and a reef break further out. Its popularity continues to grow and for all ages, it is a wonderful place to lay your sarong, frolic in the waves and soak up the warm sun.

LEGIAN BEACH

Is a beach where locals, expatriates and tourist mingle, bargain with the best, play paddle ball and football, indulge in a massage and manicure, catch up on reading, meditate, exercise, you name it. The two camps are easily recognized; the workers have as many clothes on as possible and the "bules" (Westerners) wear as little as possible. Be prepared for scantily clad Brazilians, G- stringed Italians, Australian in designer surf gear, and pretty Indonesian girls in multi-platform sandals - it is the united nations of beaches. Sunset is peak time at Sunset Legian.

ULUWATU BEACH

Uluwatu was formerly the playground of surfers almost exclusively. A number of developments planned on the barren bukit have meant that tarred roads have been put in, and slowly steps and access paths have been built down to the more popular beaches. Uluwatu is still the busiest, particularly at sunset when the monkeys play on the spectacularly located temple.

NUSA DUA BEACH

Was designed for the luxury conscious with a heavy concentration of big name hotels lining the beautiful white sand beach. Some of the resorts have private beaches but most areas are accessible. The stretch past the Hilton Resort has been a public beach and during the wet season, the outer reef there is a popular surf break. Or go early in the morning to see dolphins jumping and diving in their natural habitat approx. one kilometer off the shore.

Monkey Forest

SANGEH

The Holy Monkey Forest Sangeh may be the only one that can truly be called a forest. This is the biggest and the first monkey forest introduced as a tourist object in Bali. Yeh in Balinese means water, mampeh means flying, so this waterfall on the eyes of the villager of Les is seen as a flying water. Indeed this less known waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Bali.

From the junction 36 kilometers east of Singaraja, north Bali capital, on the road connecting Singaraja and Amlapura in the east, between Tejakula and Penuktukan villages, follow the road ascending to the south for about a kilometer. The straight road ends at the small junction before the village bathing place.
